The Erotically Charged Heart

How open is your heart right now?

Have you ever thought of your erotic turn on as an important part of having a truly open heart?

I've been practicing the embodiment of what I call the erotically charged heart lately and it creates such a sweet feeling of love nectar circulating through my system, that I think every woman should know about this, and have access to it. It's like the best drug ever. :) And it's something we cultivate and distill within our own circuitry when we are able to simultaneously activate our sexual energy and our heart energy.

This time of year is often when I teach about Mother Mary and the power of her rose heart. There are always some potential blocks or resistances to explore with women when it comes to the Virgin Mary because she has been the symbol for so many of us of sexual repression, and impossible ideals of the "good woman" who is endlessly nurturing, giving, pure, holy, and untouched.

The repressive elements can put up blocks keeping us from being receptive to the exquisite beauty that is available to us through her energy and archetype. This points to the overarching conflict that so many modern women experience between their good girl and bad girl, or the virgin or the whore complex; this false opposing binary that we have been pegged into by our society.

Our sexuality and our pure, heart centeredness have been divorced from one another in the modern western culture. We are asked to make a choice between the two, as if they couldn't possibly coexist in the same woman.

We're asked whether we are the "marrying" type of woman who will be a good selfless mother, and the kind of woman you can take home to "Mom", or are we the dirty, sultry, sexy woman that the men want to cheat on their wives for? The truth is that we are all all of these women. We all have access to these parts of ourselves, and it is simply our culture that tries to force us into boxes, and asks us to choose.

And it's worth noting that these categories are all defined through the lens of men. Part of taking our power back as women is to refuse to accept these boxes, and to claim ALL of our power to be both deeply heart centered and enjoy being sexually expressed and at home in our erotic body.

You are both the "virgin" AND the "whore". You are holy and sexy. You are Aphrodite and the Virgin Mary.

Part of how you heal these severed parts is to connect with the various faces of the Goddess, as archetypal aspects of your own self. And ultimately to understand that these expressions of the Goddess are also mapped out within your bodies circuitry. The temple of Aphrodite is in your sexual organs and pelvic area. The temple of Mary is in your heart center.

Embodying the erotically charged heart is a way to bring these parts of ourself back into sacred union, and to actually allow our heart to come fully online and radiantly open, in a way that's not possible if our sensual and sexual self is shut down.

It is quite common to see images of Mary where she is pictured with a blooming rose in her heart. The immaculate heart of Mary is often pictured with a single rose or roses across it, and rays of light beaming out of it. I love this imagery and use it often in my own visualizations that help me to connect to and open my heart. I like to feel this gorgeous rose in my heart that is blossoming open and sharing her beauty, and fragrance with all. Or seeing my heart glowing with radiant light.

Like any flower or plant, the rose has a stem, that connects to a plant that has roots that go down into the soil. In order for this rose to be healthy and blossoming, she must receive sunlight, and water. She must be planted firmly in rich nutrient dense soil, and she must be fertilized. We must plant our heart rose deeply in the soil of our body, we must attend to her roots. We must water her often.

The earth of our body is the lower chakras, and our base. To root our heart, we must activate the root chakra. We must breathe into and feel alive and animated in this part of the body.

Our water is in the second chakra and is connected to our sexuality. We water those roots when we engage the energy of what I call our "sensual goddess". When we activate our sensuality and our sexual energy, we are inviting in the flow of the water element.

And the sunlight is in the solar plexus :).

Activating the root, the sexual center, and the solar plexus energetically "charges" and nourishes the blossoming open of the heart.

Another visual that I find helpful is instead of the rose in the heart, envision the heart glowing like it is lit up with electricity, shining out into the space and creating warmth and light for those around you. Imagine that there is a cord from the heart that goes down into the electrical socket, or the battery pack in your pelvis, and that the electricity of your erotic turn on, actually is the fuel and energetic charge to light up your heart.

Practice:
I invite you to do a simple visualization and breathing practice to help charge your heart with your erotic energy.

• Sit in a comfortable and grounded position either cross legged on the floor, or on a chair with your feet flat on the floor and your knees bent at 90 degree angel. Place your hands lightly across your thighs.

• Begin to drop your awareness into the part of your body making contact with the seat beneath you, and allow your center of gravity to drop down into your pelvic area.

• Imagine you are dropping a cord of connection from the center of your pelvis down through the floor, through the foundations of the building you are in, and all the way into the earth, dropping down to the very core of the earth. A molten lava, electrically charged, shakti filled core of the earth.

• Begin to breathe energy and nourishment from the core of the earth, up into your pelvis, and feel your sexual organs being charged up with this fuel.

• Begin to do some light contractions with the vaginal muscles, creating a pulsing sensation. And begin to rotate your hips and allow an undulation to move through your lower spine. Soon you will most likely begin to feel like your pelvis is surging with energy, that could feel electric, luminescent, like the feeling of light sexual turn on.

• Keep breathing into the pelvis, and begin to imagine that you are drawing this light and energy from the pelvis up the central channel of your body from the root up into the heart. Charging each area along the way such as the womb, the gut, and the solar plexus.

• Feel the heart becoming charged up, and nourished. And imagine that the flower that is there is beginning to open and blossom. Or you can picture that the light in the heart is becoming brighter and warmer. Or some combination of both of these images. As your heart is opening continue to breathe into your pelvis and feel your erotic turn on

This practice is a very direct and visceral way for you to start to integrate and heal the severing of your inner virgin and whore, by activating your erotically charged heart.
